
Founder and Principal Trainer
Dr John Gosling, BSc (Psych) PhD, is a passionate and engaging mental health advocate and trainer. Having studied at ANU under the tutelage of Prof. Helen Christensen (former Executive Director and Chief Scientist, Black Dog Institute), Prof. Kathy Griffiths (former Director, National Institute of Mental Health Research), and Prof. Philip Batterham (co-head, ANU Centre for Mental Health Research), John's research has been awarded the ANU Centre for Mental Health Research Korten Prize, the National Black Puppy Award, and the ANU School of Psychology Honours Thesis Prize. John has taught undergraduate Psychology at both ANU and University of Canberra, and postgraduate mental health classes in ANU's Master of Public Health.
John has worked and studied in the field of mental health for over 20 years. His most notable achievements during this time include working with the Australian Government's Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children in developing survey measures around mental health and suicide and training field interviewers in the use of these measures; being appointed Manager for the first Randomised Controlled Trial to test an online intervention for insomnia in the prevention of depression worldwide; publishing a dozen peer-reviewed papers on the prevention and treatment of depression, anxiety, suicidality, and insomnia; presenting at conferences in Australia, New Zealand, USA and Europe; coordinating the ACT evaluation of Medicare Local's Partners in Recovery program for people with complex mental health needs; contributing content for ANU's uniVirtual Clinic project; recording audio mindfulness content for ANU's FitMindKit research project; and delivering suicide-prevention programs in ACT high schools through Sources of Strength.
In addition, John's lived experience of mental illness gives him valuable insight from the perspective of a consumer, and has served to strengthen his dedication to reducing stigma around mental illness and increasing mental health literacy in the community.
